Occupational Therapy Interventions for Improved Quality of Life

Cancer-related fatigue (CRF) is one of the most common and distressing symptoms experienced by cancer survivors. It’s not just “feeling tired,” it’s a deep, persistent exhaustion that doesn’t improve with rest, often interfering with daily life and diminishing the enjoyment of meaningful activities. The good news is that Occupational Therapy (OT) offers practical strategies and personalized interventions to help survivors regain control, energy, and satisfaction in their everyday lives.

Understanding Cancer-Related Fatigue

Unlike ordinary fatigue, CRF is more than physical exhaustion. It often involves:

  • A constant sense of weariness
  • Mental fog or difficulty concentrating
  • Emotional strain or frustration
  • Disruption of daily roles—whether at work, home, or in social circles

Cancer survivors may feel overwhelmed by the effort it takes to manage basic tasks, leading to withdrawal from activities that bring purpose and joy.

How Occupational Therapy Can Help

OT focuses on helping individuals engage in the activities that matter most to them. When it comes to CRF, we collaborate to identify barriers and develop a plan to restore participation in meaningful roles. Here’s how OT may help you:

Energy Conservation Techniques

OTs teach clients how to use their energy wisely throughout the day. This includes:

  • Prioritizing tasks: focusing on what truly needs to be done and letting go of less important activities
  • Pacing activities: breaking tasks into smaller, manageable steps with rest breaks
  • Simplifying work: using adaptive tools or techniques to reduce physical strain
  • Planning ahead: grouping tasks or arranging materials to reduce unnecessary movements

We want to think of our energy as a bank account where we both save and spend. In OT, we teach ways to avoid “overdrawing” the energy bank account.

Mindfulness and Stress Management

Chronic fatigue is often worsened by stress and mental overwhelm. We introduce mindfulness practices, such as deep breathing or meditation, to help clients stay present and manage stress. Mindfulness can also improve sleep quality and emotional resilience.

Exercise and Physical Activity

Although it may seem counterintuitive, gentle exercise has been shown to reduce CRF. What do you like to do?  We can help design a safe, gradual program of stretching, walking, or light strength training that builds stamina over time. These activities support cardiovascular health, improve mood, and reduce inflammation, all of which contribute to improved energy.

Lifestyle Balance and Habit Change

Cancer treatment often disrupts normal routines. OTs work with clients to re-establish healthy daily rhythms which involves a balance of work, self-care, rest, and leisure. This might involve creating structured schedules, setting realistic goals, and incorporating restorative activities that bring joy and satisfaction. We want you to re-engage in activities that are meaningful to you, allowing you to incorporate the things you need to do while having energy to enjoy the things you WANT to do.

Rediscovering Meaningful Roles

Perhaps most importantly, OT helps cancer survivors reconnect with their life roles, whether as parents, professionals, friends, or community members. By addressing physical, cognitive, and emotional challenges, and helping to establish stepwise action plans, OT empowers individuals to:

  • Return to work or adapt job responsibilities
  • Re-engage in hobbies and social connections
  • Cultivate new activities that align with their post-cancer identity
